Is your soap secretly harming you?
Most commercial soaps are filled with toxic chemicals that can do more damage than you think. Are you sure you know what's really in your soap? Take a look at the label. You might be shocked by what you find.
Can you spot the danger?
These common ingredients are linked to allergies, irritation and even hormone disruption. Take a moment and check your soap’s ingredient list. How many of them did you find?
A synthetic surfactant used as a “cleansing agent”, is commonly linked to contact dermatitis, allergic reactions and skin irritation caused by impurities from the manufacturing process, such as amidoamine and dimethylaminopropylamine, making it harmful to you and the environmental as well.
A chemical made from known carcinogens such as formaldehyde and sodium cyanide. It serves as a chelating agent that can not only cause skin irritation, rashes, and inflammation but actually increases the absorption of other chemicals into the skin, heightening the risk of adverse reactions.
Another scary sounding chemical used as an artificial whitening agent. This poses health risks when inhaled in nanoparticle form, sparking debates about its safety in personal care products.
A substance extracted from the fatty deposits of animals, especially from suet (the fat of cattle and sheep), not only raises ethical issues for vegetarians and vegans and sustainability concerns. According to Susan Miller Cavitch in the The Soapmakers Companion, "Quite a bit of controversy surrounds the use of tallow in soap making. It is thought to clog pores, cause blackheads, and increase the incidence of eczema for individuals with sensitive skin."
This cryptically labeled fragrance is particularly troubling, as it represents a mixture of various undisclosed scent chemicals. This lack of transparency is alarming since fragrances are among the most common causes of skin irritation and allergic reactions, and they can exacerbate conditions like eczema and contact dermatitis.
Parabensare synthetic preservatives used in many personal care products, including soaps, to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. However, parabens are known to mimic estrogen in the body, which can disrupt hormone regulation and lead to potential reproductive, developmental, and cancer-related health risks. Long-term exposure to parabens, particularly through skin absorption, raises concerns about their role in endocrine disruption, especially in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and children.
Sulfates, such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), are surfactants commonly added to soaps to create foam and cleanse the skin by breaking down oils and dirt. While they are effective at cleaning, sulfates can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and exacerbating conditions like eczema or psoriasis. They are also known to cause eye irritation and, in some cases, can contribute to environmental pollution through water runoff.
Aluminumis primarily found in antiperspirants and deodorants but may also be used in certain soaps. It has raised concerns due to its potential neurotoxic effects, with studies linking long-term exposure to aluminum to an increased risk of neurological diseases like Alzheimer's. Aluminum is also believed to disrupt hormone levels, particularly estrogen, which could contribute to issues like breast cancer or developmental problems.
Phthalatesare a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and to stabilize fragrances in personal care products, including soaps. These chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormone function and contributing to reproductive health problems such as reduced fertility and birth defects. Phthalates are also associated with a range of other health concerns, including asthma and developmental issues, particularly in children
Palm Oilis a widely used vegetable oil derived from the palm tree. While it helps create a rich, creamy lather in soaps, its production is linked to significant environmental harm, including deforestation, habitat destruction, and loss of biodiversity. Additionally, palm oil can be comedogenic (pore-clogging) for some skin types, leading to breakouts or irritation, and its refining process can result in the creation of harmful compounds.
Soybean Oilis commonly used in soaps due to its moisturizing properties, but it can be an allergen for some individuals, causing skin irritation or breakouts. Most soybean oil on the market is derived from genetically modified (GM) soybeans, which raises concerns about the heavy use of pesticides in GM agriculture and its environmental impact. While soybean oil is generally considered safe, its widespread use can also contribute to sensitivities in those with soy allergies.
Petrolatum(petroleum jelly) is derived from crude oil and is often used in soaps as a moisturizing agent and barrier to lock in moisture. However, petrolatum can clog pores, leading to acne or other skin irritations, especially for individuals with sensitive skin. Additionally, petrolatum may contain harmful contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been linked to cancer and other long-term health issues. Its petroleum-based origin also raises environmental concerns
FD&C Colorsare artificial dyes commonly used in soaps and cosmetics to add color, derived from coal tar or petroleum. These synthetic dyes are associated with a range of health issues, including skin irritation, allergic reactions, and hyperactivity in children. Some FD&C colors are suspected carcinogens, and many contain heavy metals or toxic substances that can accumulate in the body over time, posing long-term health risks.
